Throughout the week of May 9th, MCGS 5th graders participated in a week of Civil War activities. They learned how to write secret messages, enjoyed playing Civil War era baseball and put on their dancing shoes to learn the Virginia Reel.  Students enjoyed designing their own quilt squares and making church dolls. They even tried escaping to freedom in an underground railroad obstacle course. After activities at school, they traveled to  Lyles Station. The students loved learning about candle making, how to milk a cow, churning butter, plants, and the lifestyle of the era. They had the opportunity to taste corn cob jelly and Sassafras tea.  To top the week off, they walked to the City Museum. While at the museum, they listened to Mr. Shoaff  share stories about the war and President Lincoln.
